DIY Body Scrubs

Many salts, especially Dead Sea Salt, contain a high volume of rich minerals, including magnesium, bromide, sulfur, zinc, and sodium, which, when absorbed, all reap many health and beauty benefits. In fact, Dead Sea Salt contains magnesium which is great for detoxifying and cleansing the epidermis while promoting cell metabolism, in turn healing damaged or inflamed skin. When mixed with organic oils in a body scrub, dead sea salt can replenish tired and dry skin giving you amazing, soft, glowing skin.

Regular exfoliation with a body scrub either a salt or sugar scrub helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores of dirt and bacteria that can build up and even minimize the appearance of unwanted cellulite. If left untreated, dead cells make the skin stiff, crusty and dull. No one wants crusty, dull skin! Exfoliation removes dry, flaky, dead skin and reveals the supple soft skin beneath. Because salt has anti-bacterial qualities, it’s helpful for maintaining bacteria-free skin and preventing itchiness. The same abrasive friction between the salt and skin which causes exfoliation, also encourages the circulation of blood. That’s what gives the skin an attractive and rosy post-scrub glow.

Every time you use a body scrub, you are removing dead skin and dirt which encourages the regeneration of new skin cells. When your body starts to produce new healthy skin cells, your skin will appear tighter, younger, firmer.  We all want that!!

Exfoliating scrubs can be incredibly expensive in stores but are so easy, and a lot cheaper, to make at home. You can get all these amazing benefits and more and not break the bank when you make your own homemade DIY body scrubs.  There are so many combinations of oils, salts, sugars that you can make in just a few minutes.  You’ll love the way your skin feels and looks.   Do you need any more reasons?

As wonderful as these are, don’t overdo the use of them. You can end up drying out your skin and irritating it if you use too much scrub too often. I suggest keeping the use to a maximum of 2-3 times a week. I know, it takes some self-control, especially when you make it yourself and you see the results right away.

#1 Basic Body Scrub – Epson Salt and Jojoba Oil

This is a basic body scrub that you can make as fancy or as simple as you like. I like these ratios and use this as a base for most body scrubs that I make. For some recipes I may change the ratios slightly depending on what oil I am using or if its sugar or salt in the scrub, but this is a good starting point. Since I have eczema, I only use organic carrier oils but you can use whatever you want. The coarse Epsom salt does a beautiful job of sloughing away old and dead skin cells, revealing the soft new skin underneath. The carrier oil will make the body scrub overall less abrasive.

You will need…

  • 4 tablespoons of jojoba or any liquid carrier oil (Look for my list of carrier oils along with their comedogenic rating for those concerned with clogged pores.)
  • 1 cup of Epsom salt or Dead Sea Salt
  • 20 drops of your favorite essential oils

Directions

  1. Mix the jojoba oil with the salt of your and mix thoroughly
  2. Pour into a glass jar and let the mixture sit out overnight with the lid off to dry. Put the lid on tightly in the morning.
  3. When you are ready to use, give it a quick stir, scoop some onto your fingers or onto a loofa and massage in a circular motion over your skin. Rinse off completely.
  4. Apply your moisturizer as usual.

PLEASE NOTE – THESE DIRECTIONS CAN BE USED ON ALL BODY SCRUB RECIPES UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED.

#2 Morning Wakeup Body Scrub – Peppermint & Rosemary

If you wake up sluggish and sleepy, this is the go-to body scrub in the morning. The invigorating smell of peppermint and rosemary will light up your senses and have you feeling fresh and brand new, ready to take on the day. The cooling sensation and smell of peppermint does the most to wake you up “physically” while the smell of rosemary has been shown to increase alertness and brain activity.

You will need…

  • 1 cup of Epsom salt or Dead Sea Salt
  • 4 tablespoons of jojoba or any other carrier oil
  • 3 drops of organic rosemary essential oil
  • 2 drops of peppermint essential oil

#3 Sugar & Aloe Exfoliating Body Scrub for Oily Skin

If you are like many people with Oily skin, you most likely have tried many products that only seem to make your skin look and feel worse than before.  Oily skin is often times more prone to building up dead, greasy, skin cells, and can use a hand sloughing them off.

Unfortunately, those with oily skin are prone to acne episodes that may include whiteheads, blackheads, and pustules, and their skin will appear greasy all the time. On the positive side, if you have oily skin you get a boost when it comes to signs of aging. You’ll have less wrinkles and your skin will seem to age more slowly!  Oils that have high levels of linoleic acid are most appropriate for oily skin.

Best bets include blackberry seed oil, blueberry seed oil, goji berry oil, hemp seed oil, jojoba oil, safflower oil, evening primrose oil, or grape seed oil.  Hemp Seed Oil is a great non-clogging oil that helps to reduce the size of pores, blackheads, acne, protects the skin from free radicals. Or your choice of oils listed above.

A sugar exfoliating scrub is simple but should only be done once a week, otherwise it will strip too much oil and dry out your skin.

You will need…

  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
  • Aloe Vera Gel
  • Optional: Hemp Seed Oil

#4 Sugar Body Scrub for Sensitive Skin

If you find the grains of salt too abrasive, or if you have sensitive skin, use sugar instead. The finer granules are gentler on the skin, but still effective at exfoliating. You can use white or brown sugar.  This scrub incorporates chamomile essential oil, which is notoriously gentle and healing for virtually all skin types.

Redness, itching, burning and overly dry skin are good indicators that you have sensitive skin. Those with sensitive skin may experience bouts of rosacea, contact dermatitis, and other skin ailments.

  • For dry sensitive skin, consider almond oil, black currant seed oil, marula oil, papaya seed oil, peach kernel oil, and tamanu oil.
  • For oily sensitive skin, try borage oil, grape seed oil, hazelnut oil, meadowfoam seed oil or watermelon seed oil.

You will need…

  • 1 cup of sugar (white or brown)
  • 4 tablespoons of your choice of oils listed above
  • 5 drops of chamomile oil

GET CREATIVE!

Nothing feels more lifting than fresh herbs and flowers!  Get creative by adding them to you body scrub formulas.  Make a few extra and they make great gifts. Just be sure to use up the scrub within 1-2 weeks if you do fresh herbs or flowers. Always give your scrub a little stir before using, as the oil will likely settle to the bottom.

DIY FACE SCRUBS

A face scrub is the same as a body scrub in that it exfoliates skin, sloughing away old built up cells, dirt, and oil, and leaves your skin smooth and cleansed. The difference is that face scrubs are gentler than body scrubs, which tend to involve coarse salt as the main means of exfoliating. These face scrubs recipes use sugar instead, which works in a gentler manner than salts. For those with sensitive skin, brown sugar is softer and will do the same as white sugar but with less possible irritation.

Use white or brown sugar in your face scrubs for glowing skin. For sensitive skin, use brown sugar.

As with our own face masks, our face scrubs will often times have fresh fruit incorporated into the mix so you get all those wonderful benefits that fruit gives your body on your face J  Using a sugar face scrub promotes the continuous renewal of skin cells to reveal younger, healthier skin that has a natural radiance and is unbelievably soft.

Do not use a face scrub more than 2-3 times a week (maximum), otherwise you risk drying out or irritating your skin.  Your face scrub will usually keep for about 2 weeks if you keep it refrigerated.  Also use a spoon or a clean scooper instead of your fingers to keep any potential microorganisms from growing in your beautiful face scrub.

# 1 Kiwi Sugar Face Scrub

For most of my face scrubs I tend to favor essential oils, but sometimes I like to change up the routine.  I  love the refreshing smell and sensation of this kiwi scrub. As a bonus, the little kiwi seeds also work to exfoliate! This will leave your skin clear and bright, and it’s perfect for use in a morning shower.

You will need…

  • 2 tablespoons of white or brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of jojoba or almond oil
  • 1/2 kiwi fruit

Directions

  1. Cut your kiwi in half and scoop out the fruit, avoiding the core as best you can. Mash up the kiwi well.
  2. Mix sugar and oil in separate bowl, adding in the kiwi at the very end, and blend the entire mixture.
  3. To use simply scoop some up with your fingers in the shower and apply to face, massaging over your skin in a circular motion with your fingertips. You may also scoop a little into the empty kiwi skin and use it as a sort of natural loofa to apply.

#2 Vanilla Brown Sugar Scrub

This classic combination never gets old, but try not to add too much vanilla essential oil; otherwise you end up with a scrub that smells too sweet. You can also use fresh vanilla bean that you scrap If you’re giving this as a gift, a whole vanilla pod nestled on top adds a lovely touch. Vanilla extract isn’t generally a good idea to use as the alcohol in it can dry your skin out.

You will need…

  • 5-8 drops of vanilla essential oil or actual vanilla bean
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil or your favorite carrier oil

Directions

  1. Blend jojoba oil and vanilla oil/vanilla bean.
  1. Stir the oil blend into the brown sugar.
  1. Store in a container with a tightly fitting lid out of direct sunlight

This scrub combines exfoliation of raw sugar with the moisturizing benefits of coconut oil. Mangoes are a rich source of Vitamin A, which helps slough off dead skin, and helps new, fresh cells beneath the skin appear.

You will need…

  • ½ cup white, brown or raw sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fair trade coconut oil
  • ¼ cup of chopped raw mango

  2. Add a 1/4 cup chopped raw mango and a 3-4 drops of orange essential oil.
  3. Then mash everything together.
  4. Add more sugar or oil until you get a thick, goopy consistency that's not too runny.
  5. Work in a circular motion over your face and neck.

#4  Green Tea, Matcha Tea and Coconut Face Scrub

This face scrub is full of skin loving , free radical fighting antioxidants.  Green Tea is a rich source of anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C & Vitamin E and helps repair the effects of aging & environmental factors.  Matcha isa powerful detoxifier removes harmful toxins and fights free radicals that damage cells needed to protect our skin. Matcha is particularly good for acne because it has the ability to decrease sebum production.

  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • 1 Tbs green tea
  • 1 tsp matcha green tea powder

Directions

Add all ingredients to bowl and combine until completely mixed. Work in a circular motion over your face and neck. Keep stored in an airtight container.

DIY LIP SCRUBS

Sometimes using lip balm isn’t quite enough to get rid of chapped or peeling skin on your lips. This is where creating your own inexpensive homemade lip scrub comes in handy.  It's most effective to exfoliate your lips at bedtime, followed by a good lip balm.  But be careful not to over do it!  Using a Lip Scrub too much will make your lips become dry and ultimately results in even more chapped skin.

Use these directions for all the lip scrub formula’s.Use a lip scrub minimally followed by a lip balm to keep moisture locked in
